The Traditional Japanese Art of Chinkin

Chinkin is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique in which delicate lines and patterns are carved into the surface of lacquerware using a specialized carving tool. Gold powder and other metallic powders are then applied into the carved grooves to create a refined decorative effect.

For this artwork, the photograph is neither printed nor transferred onto the wooden panel. Instead, a skilled Chinkin artisan studies the photograph and hand-carves the portrait itself, one line at a time.

The wooden panel used for this artwork is made from wood offcuts and surplus materials generated during the manufacturing process of grand pianos by a world-renowned piano manufacturer.

Grand pianos are made using carefully selected, high-quality woods sourced from around the world.

These woods undergo processes such as natural and controlled drying, followed by careful seasoning over an extended period to prepare them for use in fine musical instruments.

Rather than allowing the valuable wood left over from the manufacturing process to go to waste, we give it a new purpose and a new life as part of a unique work of art.

Wood originally selected to create beautiful music is given a new life as a material for preserving the precious memories of a beloved pet.

This unique connection between music, craftsmanship, and cherished memories is another special part of the story behind this artwork.

After placing your order, please send us the photograph of your pet that you would like us to use for the artwork.

We recommend a photograph in which your pet’s expression and features are clearly visible and which can be reproduced at approximately the same size as the finished artwork.

Using your photograph as a reference, a skilled Echizen lacquerware Chinkin artisan begins creating the portrait.

The artisan carefully studies your pet’s expression, fur, and distinctive features, then hand-carves the image into the lacquered wooden panel, one line at a time.

STEP 3｜Chinkin Finishing

Gold powder and other metallic powders are applied to the carved lines, delicately bringing out the details of your pet’s fur and expression.
