A Red Fuji, Handcrafted on Your Guitar Using Traditional Japanese Chinkin

We take your electric guitar and commission a skilled Chinkin artisan of Echizen lacquerware to hand-carve and apply a Red Fuji design inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic “Gaifū Kaisei” (Fine Wind, Clear Morning).

In Japan, the Red Fuji has long been regarded as a symbol of good fortune.

A Red Fuji appears when the mountain is illuminated by the warm light of sunrise or sunset, creating a rare and striking sight. Because the conditions required to see this phenomenon are limited, the Red Fuji has come to be associated with good fortune, prosperity, and success.

We have brought this powerful and beautiful image to the body of a guitar through the traditional Japanese art of Chinkin.

More than an instrument for making music, this guitar is also a work of art to be displayed and admired.

“Play it. Own it. Admire it.”
A one-of-a-kind art guitar, created especially for you.

The Art of Chinkin

Chinkin is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique in which fine lines and patterns are carved directly into the lacquer surface. Gold or other colored materials are then applied into the carved lines, creating intricate decorative designs.

For this model, a skilled Chinkin artisan specializing in Echizen lacquerware carefully carves each individual line directly onto the guitar surface and finishes every detail by hand.

Because the entire process is handcrafted, no two pieces are ever exactly alike.

Why Is the Red Fuji Considered a Symbol of Good Fortune in Japan?

A Rare and Extraordinary Sight

The term “Red Fuji” refers to the phenomenon in which Mount Fuji appears red when illuminated by the warm light of sunrise or sunset.

In particular, the striking red color seen on the mountain in the early morning during the warmer months occurs only when specific conditions come together, including clear skies, suitable clouds, and the right quality of light.

For this reason, the Red Fuji has long been regarded in Japan as a rare and extraordinary manifestation of Mount Fuji.

The Auspicious Meaning of Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is one of the most powerful and recognizable symbols of Japan.

Its name has also been associated with the Japanese words “fushi” (不死), meaning “immortality,” and “fuji” (不二), meaning “one of a kind” or “without equal.” These word associations have contributed to Mount Fuji being regarded as a symbol of longevity, prosperity, success, and good fortune.

As the highest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji has also been seen as a symbol of reaching greater heights, achievement, and the summit of one's aspirations.

Ordering a Custom Design

We also accept custom design orders.
Based on your preferred motif, a lacquer artist will create a design and apply the splendid maki-e (gold lacquer) to piano parts or spoons. Alternatively, you can entrust us with photographs of your beloved pets, family members, or acquaintances, and a chinkin (gold inlay) artist will apply the chinkin to portraits, decorative frames, and other items.
We will proceed with the design while consulting with you.

STEP 1
You can place your order through retone.jp by selecting one of our "Custom-Made Design" products, or you can contact us for a consultation.

STEP 2
Design Consultation Begins: We will begin the design consultation via email or LINE between you, the craftsperson, and our company. Please tell us about your preferred motifs and designs. The craftsperson will then create a rough sketch (monochrome).
If you would like to have photos of your pets or family members incorporated into the design using the chinkin technique, please send the photos to us so we can receive them.

STEP 3
If you would like to have the Saikikou maki-e (lacquerware) applied to piano parts or spoons, we will provide you with a rough sketch (monochrome). Production will begin only after we receive your design approval.

STEP 4
Please transfer the payment to our designated bank account. We will begin production after confirming receipt of your payment.

STEP 5
After production is complete, we will send you your custom-made product along with the photos you provided.

A fusion of Kyoto's traditional maki-e lacquerware and new techniques.

The world of Kyoto's traditional craft, Kyo-maki-e, is depicted with splendor and delicate detail using gold and silver.
Our company has begun creating one-of-a-kind pianos by utilizing the traditional Kyoto craft technique of "Makie" and a new craft called "Saikikou," which uses Kyoto opal, an artificial gemstone.
A new craft that fuses the refined sensibilities of the Japanese people, Kyoto Opal, a new material born in Kyoto, and traditional Kyoto techniques, will create a new space that will be adorned with the "Saikiko Makie Piano," bringing a touch of Kyoto's traditional Japanese atmosphere to any space.

By using new materials born in Kyoto and new methods of expression that utilize them, I hope to further enhance the uniqueness of Kyoto's traditional crafts and help preserve the "authentic quality" of Kyoto's traditional crafts.
Things that can only be made by human hands, things that have been created by human hands, evoke a comforting warmth when you see them.
Our wish is to cherish "genuine quality" forever.
