[Features] - Chinkin "The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's iconic masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, this artwork is meticulously handcrafted using Chinkin, one of Japan's most refined traditional lacquer art techniques.
Chinkin is a centuries-old decorative technique in which a skilled artisan carefully engraves every line into the lacquer surface using a specialized chisel before inlaying the engraved grooves with gold leaf or gold powder. Because every detail is created entirely by hand, no two pianos are ever exactly alike.
The powerful curling waves and the tranquil silhouette of Mt. Fuji faithfully capture the spirit of Hokusai's masterpiece. Set against the piano's deep black lacquer finish, the gold engraving reveals different expressions as the light changes and from every viewing angle.
More than a musical instrument, the piano becomes a work of art that transforms any space. Combining Japan's celebrated Ukiyo-e heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and the beauty of music, this extraordinary creation offers not only the joy of performance, but also the pleasure of ownership and admiration.
Each piece is entirely handcrafted and created as a one-of-a-kind work of art.
[Production] We will carefully remove and collect the music desk from your grand piano and apply the Chinkin artwork by hand.
Each piece is made to order, and the production time is approximately 4 months, depending on the size and complexity of the design.
[Delivery] A professional piano moving company arranged by us will remove the music desk from your grand piano and transport it safely to the lacquer artist's studio.
After the artwork has been completed, the music desk will be returned by the same specialist piano transport service and professionally reinstalled on your piano.
[Customization] The Chinkin design can also be applied to other parts of your piano.
For upright pianos, decoration can be added to the upper front panel, lower front panel, the inside of the key cover (fallboard), and the keyslip.
For grand pianos, the design can be applied to the music desk, the inside of the key cover (fallboard), and even the top lid.
We would be pleased to discuss a custom design tailored to your piano.

Based on your preferred motif, a lacquer artist will create a design and apply the splendid maki-e (gold lacquer) to piano parts or spoons. Alternatively, you can entrust us with photographs of your beloved pets, family members, or acquaintances, and a chinkin (gold inlay) artist will apply the chinkin to portraits, decorative frames, and other items.
We will proceed with the design while consulting with you.
STEP 1
You can place your order through retone.jp by selecting one of our "Custom-Made Design" products, or you can contact us for a consultation.
STEP 2
Design Consultation Begins: We will begin the design consultation via email or LINE between you, the craftsperson, and our company. Please tell us about your preferred motifs and designs. The craftsperson will then create a rough sketch (monochrome).
If you would like to have photos of your pets or family members incorporated into the design using the chinkin technique, please send the photos to us so we can receive them.
STEP 3
If you would like to have the Saikikou maki-e (lacquerware) applied to piano parts or spoons, we will provide you with a rough sketch (monochrome). Production will begin only after we receive your design approval.
STEP 4
Please transfer the payment to our designated bank account. We will begin production after confirming receipt of your payment.
STEP 5
After production is complete, we will send you your custom-made product along with the photos you provided.
A fusion of Kyoto's traditional maki-e lacquerware and new techniques.
The world of Kyoto's traditional craft, Kyo-maki-e, is depicted with splendor and delicate detail using gold and silver.
Our company has begun creating one-of-a-kind pianos by utilizing the traditional Kyoto craft technique of "Makie" and a new craft called "Saikikou," which uses Kyoto opal, an artificial gemstone.
A new craft that fuses the refined sensibilities of the Japanese people, Kyoto Opal, a new material born in Kyoto, and traditional Kyoto techniques, will create a new space that will be adorned with the "Saikiko Makie Piano," bringing a touch of Kyoto's traditional Japanese atmosphere to any space.

By using new materials born in Kyoto and new methods of expression that utilize them, I hope to further enhance the uniqueness of Kyoto's traditional crafts and help preserve the "authentic quality" of Kyoto's traditional crafts.
Things that can only be made by human hands, things that have been created by human hands, evoke a comforting warmth when you see them.
Our wish is to cherish "genuine quality" forever.
